Audience Engagement with SBS Documentary Content

In 2011 SBS commissioned research into audience engagement with SBS's two flagship documentary series Go Back To Where You Came From and Immigration Nation.

Conducted by Entertainment Insights, the research shows the series filled a knowledge gap for Australian audiences and provoked reflection on Australian attitudes towards new arrivals to our shores. The documentaries provided a distinctive television experience in which audiences engaged emotionally and intellectually.

The use of individuals' stories to tell a bigger social political story was a key element in many of the participants' engagement with the programs.

The series were catalysts for conversations about diversity, and generated debate on Australia's current response to asylum seekers and broader immigration issues. After watching, viewers endorsed a multicultural society.
