Al Jazeera joins SBS world news line-up

SBS has announced that it will broadcast Al Jazeera news from Monday 8 August.

The arrangement will see a half hour Al Jazeera English news bulletin shown weekdays at 3.30pm, in addition to a full hour on Sunday afternoons at 2pm, on SBS ONE.

The Al Jazeera English news broadcast joins SBS's portfolio of leading international news programs, which also includes The Journal from Germany's Deutsche Welle, and PBS News Hour from the United States.

SBS Director of News and Current Affairs, Paul Cutler, said that Al Jazeera will complement SBS's already comprehensive world news offering.

"SBS is the home of news in many languages from around the world, and it's great to have one of the fastest growing voices in international news and current affairs join our English-language line-up. Al Jazeera is watched by millions of people, in all corners of the world, and we think SBS viewers will appreciate their fresh perspective on global events."

Headquartered in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera English is the sister channel to the Al Jazeera Arabic language service launched in 1996, and is the only English language news service based in the Middle East. Al Jazeera was launched to promote debate and give a voice to untold stories, and gained attention following its coverage of significant events in the Middle East, including the war in Afghanistan and more recently, the uprisings of the 'Arab Spring'.

SBS is the only national free-to-air network to broadcast Al Jazeera English news in Australia.
