Machinima the legal way

23 May 2008 | 11:52 - By Mixin Pixel

Mixin Pixel discusses the ins and outs of copyright in the virtual world.

Second Life is relatively lawless, but when you are bringing the virtual into the real world there are regulations that need to be adhered to. Location scouting in virtual worlds

19 May 2008 | 11:17 - By Mixin Pixel

If you are a builder or know people who can build the sets you need there are dedicated low lag filmmaking islands.

Snapzilla is Second Life's communal photo album and is a great place to scout for locations for people like me who don't have time to wander the great space of Second Life.
Some very talented virtual photographers such as Daniel Luchador introduced me to the trippy light show at Kelham. I show some great footage of light streams up the wall. Click to experience it yourself at Kelham.

Tricks of the Machinima trade

09 May 2008 | 17:32 - By Mixin Pixel

SBS's virtual blogger Mixin Pixel is your guide to making films in virtual worlds. Explore the area with Mixin each week as she makes a film that will be shown in the real world, on SBS TV.

Machinima is basically filmmaking using a real time 3D platform. I use Second Life for the purposes of my documentary filmmaking because what interests me is the choices people make for their virtual lives when they have complete freedom. Even though the graphics are far inferior to many other gaming environments, there are tricks to making it work for you. There are plenty of resources to show you the basics of machinima. The best place to start is the Second Life Machinima wiki. There you will find plenty of tutorials and useful resources.
