Paul Newman’s legacy is distinguished as much by his acts of kindness and generosity as his superstardom and exceptional acting talent. Kylie Boltin looks at back at two films that helped create the legend.
The Sting (George Roy Hill, 1973) – the title song being the ragtime piano piece, "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin – won 7 Oscars in 1973, among them, Best Picture and Best Director. In it, Paul Newman starred as Henry Gondorff, a masterful professional conman alongside Robert Redford’s Johnny Hooker (re-teamed following the 1969 classic, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).
'The Wrestler' picked up for local release
Mickey Rourke's career-defining performance is bound for Australian screens.

Film Fix: Gainsbourg and Birkin are good for the soul
Kylie Boltin revisits Slogan, a classic piece of French 60s kitsch, more famous for the pairing of its co-stars than for its contribution to world cinema.
In case you think you are going to uncover a hidden stand-out of the popular French New wave, Slogan (Pierre Grimblat, 1969) comes complete with violent camera zooms, unexplained punch-ups, beautiful women… and that’s just the opening scene.

'Whaledreamers' harpooned by good intentions
Kim Kendersley’s Whaledreamers is a passionate but flawed effort to save the world, one whale at a time. Review by Fiona Williams.
Whaledreamers charts Kendersley’s personal odyssey to end the practice of whaling. To make his point, he draws on the deep spiritual connections that exist between ancient tribes and the endangered animals, focussing on the Mirning people of the Nullarbor, whose efforts to reconnect with the spirit animals of their dispossessed sacred land leads the film’s narrative.
Film Fix: Chadha on 'Snogging'
Director, Gurinder Chadha and her co-writer, Paul Mayeda Berges answer questions at a preview screening of the energetic teen movie, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging at Curzon Mayfair Cinema in London. Kylie Boltin was there.
Gurinder Chadha is a pinup-director for the English zeitgeist.

Film Fix: All About Yves
Kylie Boltin charts the rise of fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent, the subject of a recent retrospective at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.
I did some reconnaissance this week – taking myself to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image for a dose of films about the late French designer and icon, Yves Saint Laurent.
