Global Village
Thalassa (meaning 'sea' in Greek) brings you stories of the seas of the world and their effect on people and places from the four corners of the globe. Sundays 6.00pm
No it's not a variation on E=MC2 but may nonetheless be the equation that will help us survive life after petroleum. Does anyone believe there are alternative energy sources out there apart from oil?
E2 ENERGY is also the name of a series that will replace both THALASSA and GLOBAL VILLAGE for the week starting this coming Sunday to mark the start of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen.
Catholic AND Communist?
While the Roman Catholic Church is still debating whether to allow the ordination of women as priests, one quasi religious group has already embraced them such, La Santeria in Cuba.
2001 - A Global Village Odyssey
No sooner do we reach a milestone than it is almost over. Thus tonight we mark the 2000th episode of Global Village and tomorrow (Friday) we start with episode 2001. Will we make it to episode 3000? Watch this space. In the meantime you can see two new stories in the series next Tuesday.
One strand of programming in Global Village could very much be classified as, Current Affairs. It usually deals with minorities suffering at the hands of the state. Two such minorities are connected with reindeer for their livelihood.
Two Thousand and Counting …
Another aspect that made me choose the 20 episodes for you to choose from for the 2000th Episode Special was the humanity and sense of identity inherent in Global Village.
Happy 2000th… Nearly There
Another facet that inspired me to choose the 20 stories was the colourful traditions and sometimes quirky festivals that made up this series. For example if a criminal were to be given a state pardon you'd think he'd just like to slip back into society as quietly as possible, without drawing any attention to himself. Right?
Happy 2000th…and Counting
When Global Village started on 30 November 1998 it was scheduled alongside news programs on other channels and U.S. sitcoms. And, 10 years later I guess we can say Global Village continues to hold its own. Why?
On September 24 this year Global Village will screen its 2000th episode. As you may be aware we are giving viewers a chance to vote for their favourite episodes that we'll screen in the week of the 2000th episode.
