Mozilla’s Popcorn is another in an increasing line of tools being released to enable filmmakers to mess around with online media and create their own interactive work. Here’s a report of a hack day Mozilla ran in London recently, to familiarise interested people with the tool and start opening it up to experimentation.

Following on nicely from my recent top ten list of innovative archival docs, I’ve discovered that there’s a film festival specifically for films of this type.

The era of tedious agit-prop documentaries is past, marvellous docos are upon us, but beware the pretentious bullshit of auteurism. So says Nick Fraser, head of BBC’s Storyville and the ‘Dalai Lama’ of documentary according to his introduction as the keynote speaker at the Australian International Documentary Conference. AIDC was held in Adelaide last month, and Fraser’s keynote speech is now available to watch online.

The Webby Awards People’s Voice categories are now open for voting by the public, so if you’re looking for some serious online rabbit holes down which to while away an afternoon, sign up to vote and start checking out some of the sites nominated. Think of it as a curated journey through the best of the web. There is a ridiculous number of award categories across websites, interactive advertising, mobile and apps, and of course most interesting: online film and video.

The Sydney Film Festival has released a sneak peek of 25 films that it will be screening in June, including ten documentaries. So far it looks like there’s a rich selection covering a range of styles, from some famous faces of documentary to more obscure picks. Here’s a totally subjective selection of a few that stand out.

The documentary PressPausePlay is first cab off the rank for the new Cake Film Series, a monthly cultural film screening night in Sydney. The documentary looks at the digital media explosion and examines what increasingly democratised cultural production means for content. The film series is a collaboration between Cake Wines, FBi Radio and Metro Screen, and PressPausePlay will screen on Thursday 19th April at FBi in Alexandria. Tickets here.

Chewing over the interactive sessions from the South by Southwest festival with a bit of distance, I’m finding some themes beginning to emerge - and the main one is that old principles are new again. For a conference essentially about technology (described to me by one person as ‘mardi gras for nerds’), it was good to see story getting a run in there as well.

Life in Movement, the award winning Australian documentary about dancer and choreographer Tanja Liedtke, will be getting a general release next month. The film won the Foxtel Australian Documentary Prize at last year’s Sydney Film Festival and has screened around the world to overwhelmingly positive reviews.
