Hot Doc: The Story of the Weeping Camel

09 June 2008 | 9:45 - By Documentaries @ SBS

Tuesday 10th June 10:00pm
A rare and unexpected gem. The heart-warming story of a nomadic family of shepherds who call on a musical healer to reunite one of the herd with her new-born colt.

The Story of the Weeping Camel is an enchanting film that follows the adventures of a family of herders in Mongolia's Gobi region who face a crisis when the mother camel unexpectedly rejects her newborn calf after a particularly difficult birth. Uniquely composed of equal parts reality, drama, and magic, this film is a window into a different way of life and the universal terrain of the heart.

Nominated for Academy Award in 2005.

Anyone wanting to buy this

I could only find it on Amazon until yesterday, when I bought it from JB Hi Fi. It was $20.99, which I thought was reasonable. It includes an interview with Luigi Farloni, which was also very interesting.

The story of the weeping camel

What an absolutely beautiful and touching story/documentary. In such a bleak and seemingly inhospitable terrain, people cope and basic humanity shone through, expressed in this family by the love and respect shown by its members for each other, their animals and the enviroment. I was very much moved and insipred. I am interested to know how huch of the dialogue was spontaneous or scripted. Was "the weeping camel" a story or a doumentary?

story of the weeping camel

please repeat this program in an earlier time slot so that the young can see it. It was a refreshing insight to the lives people live in Mongolia & I would love to watch it again. Is SBS releasing the DVD?

Weeping camel mother.

I love this story, it brought a tear to my eye when the tears ran down the mother camel's face. What a wonderfully loving family .And the voice of the mother, was so charming, when she sang. Our nation of people have so much more. these people live simply . And are so happy and loving.Give me that any day. Please let us see more of these wonderfull 'Hot docs'.Thank you so much Annie

Great documentary

What was most striking was the gentleness of these people - evident in the way they treat each other and in the way they treat their livestock. The simplicity and contentment of their (obviously difficult) daily lives is very heartwarming to observe. A total counterpoint to our busy, material-filled western lives. Thank you for broadcasting quality material such as this.

What a lovely film!

I found this film to be so lovely and so refreshing! The simple way of life and the delight of the young lad when he saw television was wonderful. More films like this would be great! I agree with Nick - can we see it again please SBS?!

Animal Bonding

Does anyone know if the musical ritual that brought the mother and baby camel together was actually true i.e would such a thing really work to help an animal bond with its young? - or was the whole rejection/acceptance scenario created? I tried to google about it to find out but couldn't find any answer.
