The dream of eternal beauty. The desire to defy death. They have always been there, from the earliest days of woman and man.

A documentary series on Body, Health and Wellness in Antiquity

The dream of eternal beauty. The desire to defy death. They have always been there, from the earliest days of woman and man. The epic quest against aging, disease and decay has united some of the most brilliant minds ever born: sages and scientists, poets and philosophers. They have made spectacular progress and amazing discoveries. One of the latest is the past. As modern science rockets into the future, we begin to realize how much wisdom has been lost along the way. It is time to rediscover the first chapters of the story of beauty, health and wellness – a story that has touched more lives than any other before.

In three episodes of one hour, shot in HD quality, ANCIENT BEAUTY brings the magic of some of the world’s most advanced early cultures back to life. Each episode evolves around the members of a typical family of the age. We tell exciting stories about life in ancient times and join the family members as they struggle to stay fit, beautiful and healthy. They use bizarre, yet powerful substances to hide the first traces of aging and visit healers who apply their secret knowledge. We join them at their tables to see what kind of food they ate. And we discover that many of their customs and practices seem stunningly familiar.

Episode 1. Ancient Rome
We witness the extravagant pleasures of Ancient Rome – a wellness paradise. Roman baths were temples of liquid luxury. Many put modern day-spas to shame. But Roman beauty was a dangerous business: Society ladies literally died for a good make-up.

Episode 2. Ancient China
In Ancient China, we explore the culture that created the world’s first “wellness bible” – 2.500 years before our time. The Chinese pursuit of perfect balance between mind and matter, body and soul was nothing less than the quest for immortality.

Episode 3. Ancient India
In the third episode, we visit the cradle of many of today’s hottest wellness trends. In Ancient India, cosmetics and medicine were one – and the first “nose jobs” in history were performed, long before the Christian Era.Watch the third episode right here.

I also loved this series, but I missed the episode on Ancient Beauty, China. I have sent emails to SBS but no one will answer me. I know you can watch the last episode on Ancient Beauty, India, but why cant they show the one on China as well.

Ancient China Repeat

I really enjoyed the two series that I was able to see - which I watched on this site and the TV. Is there any chance that you could repeat the Ancient China episode on the site as I would love to have seen it? I must admit though that the title "Ancient Beauty" was a little misleading. May be "Ancient Therapies" or "Ancient Medicine?" Nevertheless it was great.

The Car vs the Bicycle

Very insightful series, which shows the true beauty of each culture. When I went to China, it is exactly as shown in the show. The people are incredibly versatile and agile through thousands of years of a more natural approach to life. However, it is sad that even in China today, people have become more and more lazy as their standard of life improves. Almost gone are the bicycles and the mopeds and in come the small 4 cyl cars and even large 4wd cars into China. Times are changing. I pray.
