The most famous of the classically organised motion picture production companies in Hong Kong, the Shaw Bros. Studio exerted an indelible influence on the film industry and on filmmakers around the world.
Eight Diagram Pole Fighters - 31st July 11:20pm
Crucial to its success was the studio's string of classic martial arts films, which boasts an impressive array of stars (Di Long, David Jiang, Gordon Liu) and served as vehicles for such master filmmakers as Zhang Che, Chu Yuan and Lau Kar-leung. In the lead up to the Olympics, SBS screening 5 of the most influential Kung Fu films from the legendary Shaw Bros. Studio.
Studio's films were seen worldwide, and became a significant part of global popular cinema, like the Hollywood classics or the "Bollywood" masala film. As such, they have been an important inspiration for contemporary film making, from Wong Kar-wai, John Woo, Quentin Tarantino and American big-budget studio action movies. Beyond that, these films (particularly the martial arts titles) are supremely beautiful examples of cinema as a medium of bodies in motion, transferring an almost kinetic charge to the audience.

Cantonese/Mandarin mix up.
8 Diagram Pole Fighter was half Cantonese/half Mandarin when it all should ghave been in Cantonese. Shaws primarily switched to Cantonese language filming in 1979 or 1980. Chang Cheh's films were an exception, as he apparently never got the hang of Cantonese. A bit of trivia for you, Gordon Liu dubbed his own voice for 8 Diagram. Yeah, I know this an old post.

Wuxia Films - Dialogue Mixed-Up
The original dialogue for wuxia films with Gordon Liu is actually cantonese but since it's produced by Shaw Brothers, they do have it very professionally dubbed in mandarin . Same actor with the same voice everytime. Someone screwed up with the 36th Chamber (half canto/half mandarin). Don't think even SBS realise that!!! Most of these great movies never get screened in Oz, so we are a deprived lot. These shows may be from the 70s/80s but that's when Shaw Brothers were at its peak .

Martial Arts (Kungfu) Movies' Week
I log on to this forum page by chance and am glad I did because I totally agree with all you guys complaining about SBS showing these great movies at such unholy hours. They reserved primetime slots for boring repeats like South Park, Pizza, Top Gear. Who wants to watch the same cars performing or listen to the same jokes repeatedly??? If SBS runs out of programme to broadcast, they should show more foreign films, whether Chinese, Italian or French.

36th Chamber Of Shaolin?
I watched the 36th Chamber Of Shaolin, but there was something weird about it. The first half of the movie was in Cantonese, I know that because I speak the language. But the second part of the movie was in Mandarin, which I'm not familiar with! I am 100% sure of it! It's been on my mind, constantly bugging me! My friends think that I'm going loony toons! Can someone confirm it? Please!

Any chance for a rerun? And has SBS ever screened a movie titled Postmen in the Mountain?
I missed every single one of these due to late screening time. I don't know if SBS has ever screened a moved titled Postmen in the Mountain produced around 1999 from China? I heard that this movie was beautifully shot. If it has been screened before, can it be replayed? If it has not, is there any chance SBS can acquire broadcasting right and has it screened ? Many thanks!

Maximum Choppage no budget?
Hey! in regards to comment Rumble Pictures. I’d tried emailing you. No reply. I want to attend the screening session. Your trailer and other projects look cool! You guys made that on no budget? wow! I’m into martial arts too but so far Australia aren’t interested in making films in this area. Only boring arthouse stuff. Where’s the martial arts action? But seriously? sony handy cams? car reflectors? r u that pov?
