The Palestinian Film Festival will take place over the next two weekends, at the Palace Norton Street Cinema, Leichhardt from December 5 – 7, and the Sidetrack Shed Theatre, Marrickville from December 13 – 14.

The Festival features a diverse collection of Palestinian films, each intended to celebrate Palestinian cultural identity as well as entertain, inform and inspire.

The Opening Night film is Laila’s Birthday, a moving and funny tale of a father determined to make it home in time to celebrate his daughter’s birthday. Abu is a Palestinian judge-turned-taxi driver who encounters a number of obstacles in his effort to pick up a present and cake for his daughter.

Other highlights of the festival include Salt of This Sea and Slingshot Hip Hop. Feature documentaries include Writers on the Borders, Edward Said on Orientalism and Reel Bad Arabs, a look at the degrading depiction of Arabs throughout the history of cinema.

“We hope that our small selection will show the quality and sophistication of the Palestinian film industry despite the difficult situation that Palestinian filmmakers have to work under,” said Palestinian Film Festival Artistic Director, Sohail Dahdal.

Full details of the festival program are available at www.palestinianfilmfestival.com.au

To be in the running for a double pass to the opening night film and function, simply email us with the correct answer to the following question: What is the name of the writer/director of the opening night film?

Time to stand up to Israel; take note politicians,.

Heartening to see so many people attending these films. It is now time to demand that our politicians take a principled stand and speak out against the brutal occupation of indigenous Palestinians
