"From Moscow with Love" said host Natalya Vodyanova as the first Semi Final got underway in Moscow. Minor spoilers and no results follow.

MINOR SPOILERS: Here's a taste of some of what you will see at Eurovision's First Semi Final. This article promises to give no results on which participants has made it through or finished their run. The following article gives you a taste of the production, the show, the hosts and whether Moscow put on a good show or not without spoiling the best bits.
"Hello Europe! Hello Moscow! Welcome to the Eurovision Song Contest 2009," said Natalya Vodyanova.
Moscow turned it on for Eurovision 2009 in a spectacular first Semi Final. The execution of the musical elements was assured with an array of sights, sounds and colours. The stage with the movable LED screens proved a fantastic design.
The enthusiastic audience was, naturally, waving flags and flashing cameras. Unlike last year, this time only a few empty seats were visible. Without giving away too much more, the pre-show opener has a pantomime feel to it (and a narrator with a lisp).
Once again the hosts of the show do not disappoint. Their thick accents make it impossible to be anywhere else other than the city of the Red Square.
Natalya and Andrey Malakhov wee gushing in their enthusiasm, their adjectives and superlatives.
Some of their best lines were:
"I want to take this dress off you know?"
"Natalya has three kids."
"The country that wins has to give me citizenship."
Andrey can barely stop touching Natalya he is so thrilled to be there.
A few times Natalya struggles with her French, the official language of
the contest. But who cares, it's half the fun?
As the acts unfold look for a lot of acts in white costumes, and an overworked wind machine this year.
One montage will show how Moscow has readied for the big event with the makeover of the stadium and the arrival of the delegations. Busses transport the stars through the city.
Look out for the Green Room host Dimitri, a handsome young man in the centre of the waiting performers. He gets so enthusiastic that he doesn't even know how to finish some of his sentences.
Amongst the musical acts you can expect to see 80s hair, a Ginger-Spice lookalike, fire jugglers, some Saturday Night Fever dance moves, semi-naked stilt walkers, a piano accordion, flute, ukulele and renaissance costumes.
The mid-show entertainment by the Russians is fantastic with everything from a Red Army Choir to Cossack dancers and a pink painted tank.
And when the results for the coveted ten places gets underway, Andrey declares, "We are reaching the excitement moment of the evening."
We sure are Andrey, we sure are.
Eurovision First Semi Final airs 7:30pm Friday on SBS.

ESC forever
I like ESC, SBS has done a good job by bringing it to this far flung corner of the world.

I was very disappointed with the way the commentators portrayed this wonderful event. Quite frankly it would have been better without their not funny humour, self indulgent views and loud “Konitki tour’ kind of attitude. It all was way above their capacity.

I like Julia - she is always funny but I agree that it would be great to have her co-hosting with Des. I really miss his commentating. How about the two of them together???

Des Mangdan
Is Des Mangdan the brittish presenter we've had on SBS in the past? I have to agree, although I love Julia on Rockwiz, the presenters really flopped this year. You've lost something magic SBS, having dropped the Des commentary. Des brought the cornyness and cheesiness of ESC to life. Julia and Sam put it to death. I hope SBS isn't too stubborn to go back to the old way of doing things

WHAT ABOUT DES MANGDAN COMMENTARY OF THE ESC
WHAT ABOUT DES MANGDAN COMMENTARY OF THE ESC I Applaude SBS for sending an Australian Commentary to ESC. However WHAT ABOUT DES MANGDAN? Des Mangdan has that quirky wit & is a real lover of the ESC which his written a book about & knows how to deliver real good laugh along with genuine opinions of the ESC. BRING BACK DES... ALSO We can consider Des to co host along with JULIA & SAM as Des can Host while the others can be the back up presenters.... THINK ABOUT COME ON BABY.....

Mid show Entertainment

So excited
It wouldn't be Eurovision if the hosts COULD speak English or French. I'm trying to be good this year and not look up the results beforehand... OK, I cracked and googled whether one particular country qualified or not, but MOST of it will still be a surprise. Can't wait til Friday.
