“The Feature Elements”

26 May 2010 | 0:00 - By Costa Georgiadis

As we are coming close to the end of our garden revolution we found out that Costa had more surprises for us. He called them the feature elements”.

We woke up not knowing what to expect. Costa was yelling, “Boys come out look what I have!”

It was so cool! He had made frames of the first letter of our names and was going to plant honey suckle so we could trim it as it grew, he told us it is called Topiary. He got the idea from a recent trip to Tasmania. It’s going to be so cool to watch the letters grow into green bushes!

The next surprise was a tunnel made from metal that he put over the path and we can ride underneath it. Costa said that when he comes next time he was going to plant passion fruit and figs that will grow right over the tunnel.

In the afternoon a man came with a trailer loaded with bathtubs and pebbles then Costa said they were for growing our own plants and fish! We thought he was joking, but he wasn’t! He told us it’s called aquaponics and the fish live in the bottom and the plants grow on the top. We think Dad is more excited than any of us!

This week:
We had 13.2 kgs of food scraps.
We used 6000 litres of water for seven days.
Mum did 14 loads of washing.

Tunnel, nice idea.

I thought of using trench mesh as an archway/trellis to runs beans up, but now you got me thinking, you just took it a step further. So far have just cut some bamboo for stakes and looking forward to using them for beans.
