Eurovision 2010: Tough act to follow

28 May 2010 | 0:00 - By

Minor spoilers: In this competitive Semi, there were great vocals, silhouettes, foam instruments and light sticks. No countries or results are revealed here.

Semi Final 2 has now been run and 'won' in Oslo, securing places for 10 more lucky acts in the 2010 Final.

As we've discussed, the talent was tougher for the second Semi, so there could be tears by the end of it.

Once again, here is what you can expect to see in the second Semi, without naming names or declaring winners. Just to keep you guessing, none of these are in the order of performance.

Minor spoilers follow.

  • One act features glistening, semi-naked boys who look like they've just stepped out of a Roman movie. Accompanied by sexily-clad girls, they're a little distracting from the singer in a psuedo-white Elvis suit. The song is mediocre, but you kinda want it to qualify for its camp factor.
  • Here comes a diva, billowing smoke and backing vocalists, as this act shoots for class here and it seems to be working with the crowd. Her top notes are a little under pitch seems to rail against her obvious experience. Maybe she's having an off day, because otherwise this is a strong entry.
  • A dramatic song with a singer who is initially shielded by hood, until she is revealed. There is nobody else on stage with her and by the looks of her performance she doesn't need anyone else. Vocally she is one of the best of the night, in the style of Shakira or Anastacia. The song has drama written all over it.
  • Wow, what a great prop creates silhouettes from these male and female singers, without looking clumsy onstage. This song is easily melodic, a little 1990s in style. These two don't leave anything out. Walking the catwalk, wind machine, pyrotechnics. Classic Eurovision.
  • Here's a good looking boy behind a guitar, supported by a band and an easy listening song. There are a few of these kinds of entries this year and musically it isn't necessarily the strongest of them. But it still deserves a shot over some distracting, overblown pop entries.
  • Finally a real singer. He is handsome, humble, dramatic - the Anthony Callea of the night, stylishly dressed, completely devoid of tricks. There is real passion here and the crowd just loves it.
  • Foam instruments? Is this the Wiggles? Maybe not, at least the Wiggles can dance. Wait for the costume reveal: glitter shorts. Bless.
  • Just one singer attempts a body mike. She has three dancers who pirouette around her and sweep her off her feet. How does she sustain the notes so well in all those extended body moves? She really turns it on towards the end of the song. A pretty strong entry and a pretty good song.
  • What's with the giant walnut on the stage? Oh wait. I get it. This song starts off moderately before it picks up. The singer is alluring, better than the cultural, somewhat pantomime staging around her. Good vocals.
  • One act sees the audience all waving light sticks throughout the Arena. Did they just buy the audience? Thankfully the singer is utterly charming. Should be a strong contender.
  • Our hosts Erik Solbakken, Haddy Jatou N'jie, and Nadia Hasnaoui are again accomplished presenters for Semi Final 2. They have been rehearsing too well, maybe they won't be veering off script at all this year…
  • In attendance once again is Eurovision royalty, the very first winner Lys Assia, who won for Switzerland back in 1956 with Refrain. The audience loves her. Give the woman a rose.
To find out which countries qualified don't miss Semi Final 2 at 7:30pm Saturday on SBS ONE.

TURKEY ROCKED THE HOUSE :)

Turkey came second :) The band was awesome! It should have taken 1st place but unfortunately Germany did...Germany sounded slighly demented :S But Ukraine was also really good, the singer had an amazing, strong voice. She deserved to be top 3!

The Australian hosting is just not up to par-PLEASE bring back Terry Wogan and if he is unavailable the dry, witty humour of the English will suffice!!!

turkey were worst

it amazes me turkey has so many votes - they were unremittingly terrible, and not in the hilariously so bad its good way of other eurovision songs. a bad rip off of system of a down is not something that should have made it to the final, or be getting any votes.

Appaling these two represetatives of Australia

Euro Vision is meant to be fun not taken two seriously as the level of Musicianship is pretty appalling if know anything about music. But these commentators have taken Hic and Hillbilly to new realms never before seen in Europe or Australia. To begin with as she has admitted she is bias-she said so towards the end of the voting process. Well she is and I should say from her comments for Israel. Please keep the bribes to yourself Julia, you don't have to make it obvious as for the friend...lol takes faggy to a new level. If any European was watching the comments coming fro this two. They as I would be ashamed to be called Australians...such really blokey (from her) low level comments not fit for primary school. Last year she was fine and elegant..what happened did she do a course in manners in Cambelltown Sydney before she flew to Norway?
