Enjoying the World Cup - in Style

Talking technology, you'd rarely expect to hear much from me about sport - however, when the two become so linked in our lives, it's hard to ignore!
So, I thought a quick look at how to enjoy the 2010 FIFA World Cup in style no-matter where you are would be worthwhile.
With matches across the night, World Cup action is available from 9.30pm to 6.30am so you'll likely need to embrace each and every platform SBS has to stay right in touch with all the match news.
There are three distinct platforms for you to choose from, I'll cover each one for you here:
TV - The natural choice when it comes to the World Cup of course, there is nothing better than watching live sport on TV.
For this, I would choose a nice, shiny new LED or PLASMA TV. In recent months I've been fortunate to view live sport on TV's from Sharp, Samsung and Sony.
The Sharp Aquos LCD TV I use in my own personal 'office' space at home does me just fine. Viewing a 46 inch TV up too close means you really start to see the 'artifacts' in the picture, the blurring around the edges of screen graphics and the slight lack of clarity in some detailed views. But for easily less than $1500, a big TV like this is an affordable option if you can't stretch the budget too much.
Samsung have some great TV's available in the LED and PLASMA ranges. Everyone in the business confirms that PLASMA is in fact the best way to watch sport - because of the way it generates the picture it is best placed for fast motion viewing and if you're lucky you might just find a good 50 inch Plasma between $1600 and $2000. Samsung's LED range too is excellent, and in then 46 inch plus range you'll be looking at around $2,000.
SONY probably have the pick of the bunch at the moment, with the new BRAVIA series hitting your lounge (or Shed!) with a sleek design. The full glass front all the way to the edge realy hits the spot. Plus, plenty of SONY's come with the high refresh rate (200Hz) which will aid your sports viewing experience.

Remember, if you're buying a TV, Plasma is best for sport, however with limited options for Plasma in all sizes and brands, outside of that, consider the refresh rate, contrast ratios and make sure you are getting FULL 1080 HD - don't settle for anything less.
While on TV, I have to mention 3D. Both SONY and SAMSUNG are in the market today with 3D TV's. If you are popping out to buy a new TV, and your budget allows for it, DO consider 3D. However, if the budget is tight, honestly, don't stretch it - I watched a recent 3D game, and it was amazing, at ground level. Problem was those high 'all of field' shots were blurry and somewhat off-putting. This will improve as directors understand how best to present the action, but for now, if you are a Gaming or Movie buff - 3D is a great option - for anyone just upgrading TV's, I think there is some solid, and frankly amazing value in the top brands LED offerings.
Radio - The forgotten cousin, radio still plays a huge role in our daily media lives. And with the World Cup that is no different.
This year, every single World Cup match is being broadcast on SBS Radio - Now, I work at SBS Radio, and know full well that a lot of you are possibly saying to yourself "SBS has a radio station?" - Primarily, SBS Radio offers In Language radio services, along side our twice daily English News Current Affairs. However, during the World Cup, SBS Radio is offering each match in English (on the AM band - or Digital 1), and in the language of one of the competing teams (on the FM band - or Digital 2). This extensive coverage is valuable for you if you are a shift worker, are driving around overnight, or don't have a TV (or want to get out of bed) in the bedroom to flick on for a score update.
A full list of SBS Radio frequencies is available here : http://www.sbs.com.au/radio/article/551/AM/FM-Frequencies
And, in 2010 for the first time, the World Cup is available on Digital Radio. With Clear digital quality sound you'll feel like you're there. There are a stack of Radio's available today. I would recommend:

BUSH "Walker" for a portable option (http://www.bushaustralia.com.au/productsite/details.aspx?pid=192&stid=31)

Sanyo RM-DB5 Clock Radio for the bedside option (http://www.sanyo.com.au/products/audio/digital-radio/rmdb5)

OXX Classic for the home that enjoys a world choice (also has WiFi so after the world cup, you can also tune to stations around the world) (http://www.oxxdigital.com/au/product.aspx?pid=313)

BUSH Portable for the Kitchen radio or semi-portable option (http://www.bushaustralia.com.au/productsite/details.aspx?pid=179&stid=31)
There is so much choice, and prices are getting lower and lower, the World Cup is a great reason to buy.
Online:
The World Game on SBS is more than just a weekly Football Show, it's a brand, it's everything football on SBS. During the World Cup, the World Game website is everything World Cup.
You could spend hours there.
With Match replays, highlights, live streaming, and links to everything you could want regarding the World Cup it's your one-stop-shop.
If you're out and about a lot, the new Apple iPad is a simply brilliant way to stay in touch.

Now let me be clear: some of the World Game Site (and therefore the entire Internet) is built in Adobe Flash, which you won't see on the iPad, however, for all the news and inforamation you'll be 100% fine. Match replays and video won't be available to you.
At home, any good PC will do the trick. You should make sure you have a solid broadband connection for any streaming video or audio you want to do, and to check that, I recommend http://speedtest.net - great for checking your speed.
Radio commentary is streamed live online for all matches, check that out at http://sbs.com.au/radio
There are so many options - so - Enjoy the World Cup!

ugh
won't be watching sbs until this nonsense is off the air why must they play soccer on every single channel? so much for variety & having the option of watching another stream no shows, no movies, no alchemy. I have already given ch10 the flick for their treatment of tv shows over sport & sbs may be next in line for now so long sbs, hello internet.

with a few dozen games in the first round alone, even the most diehard of fans won’t be able to stay glued to their TV set for every minute of action. SBS Commentary.
I'd like to know who recruited Ned Zelic to join the analist panel when he clearly knows nothing about soccer. This was indeed a poor choice.
