No tour start for Gerro

No Tour de France for Simon Gerrans (AAP)

Stunned, absolutely stunned, that was my reaction to the news posted by Simon Gerrans on Twitter.

"Well I just got a call from my DS. I'm still digesting the news I didn't make the tour team. I'm pretty disappointed. What do u all think?"

I don't think Gerrans has to ask, I'm sure he already knows what we're all thinking but does Cervelo Test Team really want to know?

Here's the reaction from the Twitter Vox Pop.

rachiepoo1 CTT was a team i support, and was going to cheer them on at tdf now thinking of a boycott

carmichaelsc What?! Simon Gerrans not on the Tour team? That's crap, man!

cyclesportmag Simon Gerrans left off the Cervelo Tour team? One of the best riders of the Spring, Giro stage win, Prato Nevoso last year. Harsh decision.

JasePhillips No Simon Gerrans at the Tour? TdF stage win, Giro stage win and top 10 in all 3 Ardennes Classics in the last year and no Tour start? What?

HoskenS Feeling a bit bummed that there will be no Robbie (ok, injured) but no Simon Gerrans at this year's Tour de France. What are they thinking?

BW1978 I cannot believe Cervelo has kept Simon Gerrans off their TdF roster! Are they trying to lose!?

kiwirider Thinks Simon Gerrans is the unluckest man in the pro peloton today..total bulshit....

wilko72 @lancearmstrong What chance we can get @simongerrans on Team Armstrong in 2010....what a joke he was cut from the team

Now, Gerrans is taking the decision like a real pro, saying, "Now I've digested the news I'm washing it down with a good bottle of Aussie red with one of my besties @markrenshaw1. Check his twitter out!"

That's the Aussie spirit! But I feel like crying in my beer. His loss means one less winning pick for my RaboPlus Fantasy Tour de France.

So what is Cervelo's reasoning behind this baffling decision? Wasn't Gerrans supposed to be giving team leader Carlos Sastre a helping hand when the Tour de France started pointing uphill?

Has Gerrans' form suddenly evaporated since the Giro d'Italia? I don't know about you but in that race I thought he looked like an athlete about to peak, not someone about to go off the boil.

What happened at the CTT training camp in Colorado that could point to Gerrans being dumped? Form or internal team politics?

Pro cycling is a tough sport and grand tour team selections are a fine art - getting the mix right and having nine guys ready and primed at the same time is no easy task - but Gerrans not ready, pull the other one?

So what's behind this? Cervelo, the fans want to know.

Politics always, not how great you are. Simon will surely be more tour savvy next time. Its all about looking after you mates. Sastre would not last the distance if it wasn't for his "servants" Simon is a great hill climber, and his turn will come. He has tremendous endurance, which many of the European riders don't possess. In Australia , not too many of the fancy pants Europeans came down under to race in the heat in Adelaide. At least lance hacked it out. In fact, teams are a load of garbage, and does not test a solo rider who may have tremendous allround endurance. At least the Sun tour in Australia operated this way in days of yore. But, It's all about the big bucks now. Time will tell, in the future, as to what happens with teams.

the matt white sistuation was a little diffrent ... he rode Cofidis in 2004 when he made his tour debut and then broke his collerbone not US Postal ... i think the real reason Gerro was'nt picked is cervelo want either Lead Out men for Thor or Climbers for Carlos and Simon does'nt quite fit in that category ... but tough decision and an unpopular one ... shame cause simon could really do some good work for Carlos and Thor .. i think a decsion that Cervelo may regret later in july

Well Brett Lancaster got a start as well as the other "aussie" Heinrich Haussler. Simon could still get a start - remember poor matt white missing out on a start in the tour on Lance's team for years, finally got picked only to break his collar bone the day before the start. Keep the faith - Simon will start!

Shame, CTT, shame!! Perhaps Simon G should check his family tree for some Spanish roots... what a waste of a talented rider on some second-rate team...no win for Carlos this year!

Velonews did an interview with him about 10 days ago. Interestingly Simon states he talked himself out of a couple of races for June between the Giro and Tour. He perhaps talked himself out of a Tour ride at the same time. That said he is very unlucky. it goes to show Scott Sunderland may have made the right decision earlier this year, mind you if he was still ther Gerro would most likely be riding.

Just read an article on cervelo site about the tour team. “The decision for the final Tour de France Team was certainly not an easy one,” “Though we are fortunate to have many excellent riders who are in good shape and ready for the Tour, in the end only nine riders per team are allowed to start. said Thomas Campana managing sports director of Cervelo. It then goes on to talk about how the main goal is gc but also want to Thor to win the green jersey. i'm still curious about gerrans. has to be more to come.

is CTTs thinking warped or what . Sastre doesn't deserve to win and wont . I feel for Simon and are really disapointed for the sport that someone in really good form is unable to show the world how good they are Its a big RIP OFF

LOOK OUT... that's all I can say. As Australians we all love Gerro for the nice guy, professional, hard working, pain loving, big stage winning rider that he is. Imagine now what he is going to be like ANGRY. Keep your pecker up Gerro... and BRING ON THE VUELTA!
