Cunego plots to counter Armstrong
Damiano Cunego looks for an alliance of riders to counter Lance Armstrong in the 2009 Giro d'italia.
Lampre's Damiano Cunego said he is likely to forman alliance with former winner Gilberto Simoni to counterthe expected strength of Lance Armstrong and Ivan Basso at the 2009 Giro d'Italia.
In an interview with Italian sporting daily La Gazzettadello Sport, Cunego said, "I've spoken to Gilberto about an alliance," adding that his participation in the Giro will beofficially announced when some final details are smoothed out.
"Ivanand Lance form a common bloc for their friendship and style of racing. Weclimbers have to seek a counter-measure. Gilberto knows all the Giro'sroads better than anyone."
"Lance will be very strong. It true that he's been away for three years, but in the Giro, he will be there to win, not finish 7th or 8th." Cunego said.
Cunego's primary goals for 2009 will be Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Giro and the World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
