New 2010 Tour France winner Andy Schleck says he takes no comfort in being awarded the title of the world's greatest road race on the back of Alberto Contador's doping ban.

I battled with Contador in that race and I lost. "If I succeed this year, I will consider it as my first Tour victory.

Schleck finished second to the Spaniard in the 2010 Tour de France and as a result of Contador's two-year doping ban for testing positive to clenbuterol will be officially recognised as that year's winner.

But Schleck said he would not celebrate his victory given that he "always believed in his (Contador's) innocence".

"I battled with Contador in that race and I lost, Schleck said.

The Luxembourg was runner up in 2011 also to Cadel Evans. He said of the 2012 Tour de France;  "If I succeed this year, I will consider it as my first Tour victory."

Evans, who was runner-up in the 2007 Tour de France by 23 seconds to Contador, said he understood how Schleck felt.

"It has happened now," Evans said.

"It is history.

"I can understand why Andy feels that way because you do everything you can to win and in the situation that is there at the time.

".. what happens, happens and it is past and we go on."
