Francois Pervis claimed his maiden French title in track cycling's prestigious sprint event after ousting compatriot Michael D'Almeida 2-1 in their final overnight.

Pervis, a specialist in the non-Olympic event of the kilometre time trial, took gold while D'Almeida, who is part of France's Olympic team sprint trio, settled for silver.

Three-time world champion Gregory Bauge, France's sprint gold hope for the London 2012 Olympic Games and a key member of their sprint team trio, failed to make the semi-finals after being stunned by up and coming Charlie Conord.

Although Bauge's mind is said to be fully focused on his Olympic challenge, Conord then went on to beat the established Kevin Sireau to take the bronze medal.

In the women's event Clara Sanchez claimed her 10th consecutive national sprint title after beating Virginie Cueff in the final.

Pervis and D'Almeida are set to meet again tonight in the keirin, with an Olympic qualification spot at stake.
