The boss of Cadel Evans's BMC team insists the Australian will be their sole team leader at the Tour de France.

BMC president Jim Ochowicz has moved to end speculation about Evans and the team's rising American star Tejay van Garderen.

Ochowicz said it was clear that Evans would be their number one rider in the three-week Tour, which starts on June 29.

He pointed to Evans's outstanding Giro d'Italia, which has been a vast improvement on the 2011 Tour de France champion's previous form in Europe this year.

"It (Evans's Giro performance) solidifies that, you have to have the confidence and he does," Ochowicz told Fairfax Media. "This is a great performance here.

"Tejay is a great young athlete coming up (and) he is learning from Cadel."

Evans finished a disappointing seventh in his Tour title defence last year and van Garderen was fifth.

The American continued to show his talent last week by winning the Amgen Tour of California, his first major stage race title.

BMC said they only entered Evans in the Giro to boost his poor form ahead of the Tour.

The 36-year-old has ridden throughout the three-week grand tour with great consistency and remains a title contender in second overall.

This year's Tour de France will start in Corsica on June 29 and is expected to suit the climbers.

Every stage of the Tour de France will be broadcast live on SBS ONE. Check guides for further details.
