The Dream Racer Christophe Barriere- Varju speaks to SBS
Spain's two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz won the 2010 Dakar
Rally driving a Volkswagen, while in the motorbike category Frenchman
Cyril Despres secured his third Dakar title.
Sainz's Volkswagen teammate and closest rival Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar won the final stage, a 335km special from Santa Rosa, but it wasn't enough to bridge the gap.
I have always known Dakar to be an Everest, so I should have been
better prepared for the task of covering our Australian competitors at
the 2010 edition.
Driving 7,500 kilometres, camping in tents in sand pits, rock fields or worse, crossing the Andes twice, working until 10pm to get quotes and write stories, then driving into town to find an internet connection and throwing down the sleeping bag at midnight or 1am.
The Dakar culminates with the podium celebration in Palermo, Buenos
Aires.
Here in the Palermo Equestrian arena, riders, drivers and
co-drivers mount the dais to receive one of the highest gifts in
motorsport - the Dakar medal.
