Paul McGeough is a former Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and is now its Chief Correspondent.
Much of his reporting has been from conflict zones, in particular Iraq and Afghanistan. Paul was in Afghanistan just before September 11th, and in New York on that day.
He hit the headlines in May 2010, when he was detained and subsequently deported from Israel, while reporting from a Gaza-bound flotilla that was seized by Israeli defence forces.
He’s twice been named Australian Journalist of the Year, and in 2002 his reporting from Afghanistan won a Johns Hopkins University-based SAIS Novartis prize for excellence in international journalism. He’s also written several books about his reporting experiences.
Paul was a guest reporter for Dateline in September 2009, when Highway to Hell told the story of the challenges for international security forces building a new US$100 million highway through hostile territory in Afghanistan.
He also reported from Iraq in October 2010 in Power Struggle, on whether the country's huge oil reserves will finally bring it prosperity and security, or divide the country further.
