Following the alleged death of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, Sri Lanka's government has declared victory in one of the world longest-running civil wars, but it faces fury from a Tamil diaspora which had wide sympathy for the rebels.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) launched a campaign in 1972 to create a separate Tamil homeland in the Sinhalese-majority island, with much of the group's funding coming from Tamils overseas.
There is now speculation that the territorial ambitions of the Tamils may re-emerge in guerilla-style attacks in Sri Lanka or overseas.
