Video journalist Amos Roberts shows us the new 'smuggler's trail' - the route through Malaysia that many asylum seekers are now using to avoid a crackdown on people smuggling in neighbouring Indonesia.
With Australia now concerned that Malaysia is a weak link in its border protection chain, efforts are being stepped up to stop asylum seekers using Malaysia as a jumping-off point in illegal entry to Australia.
But, as Amos finds, Malaysia is using an iron fist in a war on illegal immigration, and genuine, UN-registered refugees are often caught up in the dragnet - arrested in midnight raids and locked up in overcrowded detention centres.
Amos is the first foreign journalist to film inside a Malaysian detention centre, where he found angry inmates complain of cramped conditions and putrid food.
With the Australian government determined to stop asylum seekers from leaving Malaysia, should it take any responsibility for what happens to them afterwards?
