You may have been to Hollywood, you’re familiar with Bollywood, and if you saw Evan William’s Pakistan story earlier this year, you may have even heard of Lollywood… But how much do you know about Nollywood?
It turns out Nigeria is home to a thriving African film industry that’s making waves across the world. Nollywood is churning out around 2,000 films a year, making it the second-most prolific movie industry on earth, just behind India.
Aaron Lewis travels to Nigeria to meet Nollywood’s filmmakers, who have become famous for working under extraordinarily difficult conditions. Aaron speaks with Moses Ewan, one of Nigeria’s most popular directors, who thrives in an industry where entire two hour movies are often conceived, written, filmed, and on the screen- all in less than a month.
These films often take a fearless approach to some of Africa’s toughest issues… HIV-aids, political corruption and urban poverty. These heartfelt homegrown stories have propelled Nollywood into African homes… And pushed aside the American blockbusters.
