As three huge US oil companies pass the blame over who was responsible for the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig and the subsequent oil spill, Dateline goes to meet the local people facing the consequences in the State of Louisiana.
The Gulf of Mexico is home to one of the most fertile fishing grounds in the world, but with commercial fishing suspended, local oyster fishermen now face a real threat to their livelihoods.
They’re so desperate, they’ve even offered their boats to help in the effort to contain the oil and reduce damage to the environment, but with an estimated 800,000 litres of oil spewing into the sea each day, it’s a huge, and some say impossible, task.
In an area that’s already faced disasters like Hurricane Katrina, video journalist Ginny Stein reports on the attempts to stop the region facing another catastrophe.
