India’s financial capital, Mumbai, is being torn between its role as a cosmopolitan business hub and a stronghold of the Hindu nationalist party, Shiv Sena.
It’s been described as a group of hardline militants with a reputation for violence against muslims and foreigners… and it’s currently the official opposition in the Maharashtra state government.
The party was founded in the sixties by a leader who’s praised Hitler, and more recently it told Australian cricketers to stay away from Mumbai after attacks on Indian students in Melbourne.
A TV station that accused the party of being involved with India’s mafia and political murders was even stormed and its journalists attacked.
The party says it doesn’t turn to violence and extols its ‘family values’ and huge support, but there’s concern that if it returns to power, more violence will follow.
