Baby girls are being killed in the Tamil Nadu area of India, so their poverty-stricken parents can avoid paying large dowries when their daughters marry.
Other girls are being aborted, abandoned or given up for adoption, and some that do reach adulthood are being married to close relatives… all to avoid families losing what little money and property they have.
Video journalist Yalda Hakim meets one heartbroken woman, Parvati, whose first baby girl was killed by her husband. She was then forced to give up her second girl for adoption before she suffered the same fate.
Yalda also meets a good samaritan couple from the United States working at an orphanage for abandoned children… some of whom were found dumped in the gutter.
But what’s being done to educate people to stop them killing their daughters and correct the major gender imbalance it’s causing?
