An unlikely theme park has become one of Lithuania’s top tourist attractions… it’s been nicknamed Stalin World and documents the darkest days of the Russian occupation.
It was a period that saw hundreds of thousands shipped off to the notorious Gulag work camps in Siberia… many never to return.
The owner of Grūtas Park says it’s a reminder to future generations of what happened, and a lesson not to allow history to repeat itself.
But the Gulag survivors are appalled at the commercialisation, and it’s reignited a debate over how, if at all, the Soviet era in Lithuania should be remembered.
