As the United States wakes up on 11th September 2011, Dateline with Yalda Hakim comes live from New York. We have special reports and expert analysis exactly 10 years on from the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
Aaron Lewis visits Middletown in New Jersey, which lost more people at the World Trade Centre than anywhere outside Manhattan. It’s what the town’s younger generation call their Kennedy Moment… an event that changed their country forever, but also ultimately brought their multi-faith community closer together.
SBS Chief Political Correspondent Karen Middleton is embedded with Australian troops in Afghanistan, as they still battle to stabilise security, and talk candidly about the soldiers who’ve lost their lives. Karen also asks former Prime Minister John Howard how his decisions in 2001 compare to the reality in 2011.
Fouad Hady reports from his home country of Iraq, which was at the centre of hostility both before and after 9/11. His snapshot of life shows how little some things have changed over the past decade, with people still struggling to deal with violent attacks and a lack of basic infrastructure.
And Yalda Hakim interviews former US Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage, and former Senior Adviser to the CIA's Osama Bin Laden unit, Michael Scheuer, for their views on America's response to the 9/11 attacks.
