The recent Taliban execution of a 22–year-old woman in front of a crowd of cheering men in Afghanistan shocked the world when it was published on the internet.
But who was she? And how could such a barbaric killing happen? Yalda Hakim travels to Afghanistan in search of answers.
The place where the killing happened is just an hour from the capital, Kabul, but a world away from 21st century life.
Speaking to an eyewitness and local people, she finds that violent abuse of women over ‘crimes’ such as adultery is commonplace.
Many live in fear, and even being in prison is a safer option than facing the terror of the Taliban.
But there are also women who are fighting back, including MP Fawzia Koofi, who plans to take on Hamid Karzai for the presidency.
