the elephant orphans in Animal Planet/BBC's Elephant Diaries Being Orphaned is just the beginning

been there years ago. I've seen Jipe and Nalitu weeks before they unfortunitely died. Sorry that happens. They were seriously ill with pneumonia, the number 1 baby killer. I wish i had the money to go back it's surely worth it. I have thousands of photos and lots of hours of film of the orphans who grew up there and returned to the wild successfully in their newly formed herds. For Europeans there are different websites to sponsor and adopt the orphans: www.elephantfriends.org www.olifanten.org

Orphans

I sponsor three orphans and love them all. If you can help, then help. The people at DSWT have given their lives to save and raise the eles and rhinos and pretty much anything else that comes for help.

Volunteering

Linda, the Trust has very specific policies regarding volunteering (they basically don't allow it). You can read about their policy and the reason behind their decision to not have volunteers here: https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/html/help.html (scroll to the very bottom of the page).

Gratitude for this organization

My visit to the the Trust in Nairobi this summer moved me enormously. I feel huge gratitude to everyone dedicating their lives to saving these most amazing creatures, who are capable of teaching us so much about ourselves. Elephants live so much from their hearts, which we humans could certainly benefit from doing more. And what a privilege too, to be close to these creatures, giving and receiving love. I have two adopted babies, and want to do more!!

Spread the word! These elephants are worth saving.

I too sponsor an elli, and will probably sponsor another as my first has recently been released into a herd. I visited the nursery last month and it was a totally precious and wonderful experience. The loving relationships between elephants is truly amazing, and the same goes for the loving relationships between these keepers and their little ones. I saw it for myself. Please, please spread the word to people who can also sponsor. You can check them out on Facebook too.
