'GasLand'
'GasLand' won best Documentary at Sundance this year, just watched the trailer and it made me think of the bubbling mud in Indonesia that I have seen images of. Same bubbling mud in 'GasLand' it. I would suggest said bubbling mud (and all the other disasters that go along with it) definitely has to do with the process of mining natural gas.

my two cents
Finally watched this after realising Dateline episodes are online. The footage doesnt make you appreciate just how big this is (and this was 12 months ago, the highway was still in use. I visited with the mud volcano last year. The reality is, that if this happened in a country with a not so corrupt judiciary Lapindo would have been found responsible. The scientific evidence, apart from government/Lapindo commisioned 'experts', has all pointed to gas exploration by lapindo as to blame.

Mud Volcano
Pretty good story, guess I saw the re-run tonight. I don't understand how the company involved can be expected or even is will to pay victims when they have been cleared in court? I also don't understand how the Aussie expert can say they caused the mud volcano just by saying an earthquake was too far away... how can he be sure...? how can anyone predict mother nature, especially after what we see happening in the world today.

Not very well researched story!
Why was no mention made of Russian research into this disaster that was widely reported in Indonesia media recently? Perhaps because the 'Australian' and Tingay said the data was flawed? I feel SBS should have researched this topic in more depth to give the public the 'real story' about why the Indonesia people are not getting international aid in this instance. Reports like yours have ensured no one wants to get involved or help. It is surely more about the people than the cause!

Our Own Makings
It is appalling to see how the Elite in Governments and corporation brush aside their responsibilities of health, environment and compensation issues so adversely effecting poor people in their own countries. If this is the case with them than what must be the multinationals corporations getting away with? Bhopal's Union Carbide tragedy in India is an example. A similar documentary was shown some time back about Oil spills from corroding pipes in Niger Delta. The Ok Tedi environmental disaster on our door step is also an example. It seems that Profits and such (minor) issues do not mix! Dateline should also air some of our own.
