I believe coporal punishment is meant for good but the users can twist its purpose.

Abuse

The 'punishment' that was shown in that doco is nothing but abuse. As detailed below by many it was a teacher who couldn't control themselves when times were tough. Try that with a kid in Aus and the teacher will be dusted up by a older kid or parent in no time :-)

Not right

If i ever found out that my child was being subject to the illegal abuse depicted in this video, there would be no bounds to my fury and i would enact retribution upon the teacher involved and the school in question. As for Australian schools introducing CP, i dont agree. Be more strict but do not touch the child/student. Teachers need to inform the parents and allow them to apply a reasonble punishment (thats if the parents care enough about their child to apply a punishment).

its lift the rod or lose the face for these teachers

Violence is not a sure way of making someone better. If you think it is okay to do it in retaliation to disrespect most of the time it is done in anger and seen as the quick answer to everything. Most of the 'horrible' teens and evens adults would have suffered physical or emotional abuse, neglect, or simply because they're young. So if you're 80 or even younger and think the kids today need a good whacking, lets hope you've put in enough time and charity for those people to redeem your comments.

You try it...

I have recently quit teaching after 7 years as a primary teacher. If being challenged and abused on a daily basis is part of the modern teachers job description I'm going back to my trade, at least there I can be abused by bricklayers and plumbers instead of ill mannered children and equally petulant parents.

Beating leads to emotional & psychological damage

I'm 42, received corporal punishment during my schooling Grade 1, beaten with a tether ball racquet for being in a classroom during morning break (little lunch). I was constructing a water based hour glass using plastic bottles. 6 strokes Gr 6, falsely punished for talking in class with a leather strap. 18 stokes (extra for denial of 'crime') Gr 8, punished for defending myself against 2 bullies, cane 12 strokes Would have gladly beaten punishers senseless until recently, in therapy for PTSD

Never Did Me Any Harm

I was schooled by De La Sale Brothers and was beaten when needed with the strap. I have grown up to be a respectful, honest and decent person, who does not have any hang ups about being strapped. I can remember my hand or hands would be swollen and bruised when given '6 of the best' for breaking the rules. It took a few days to go away and gave me time to think about what I had done. Kids are not as respectful today as they were in the 70's. Discipline is everywhere, not just at home.
