My thoughts
I do not think we see the future as they do, the Chinese are not silly, what will they cost to build in 15 -20 years, they will be filled, maybe I am wrong but in Australia the Chinese are doing what the Greeks did, we lived in 1 room, shared kitchens and toilets and purchased houses as a joint investment, things where easier and I do feel for these hardworking people, breaks my heart parents living away form there children. I am confident the Chinese will rule the economy as they never give up.

Thru pollution the light shines...
I enjoyed this piece. When we were considering buying property in Beijing this has open my eyes, and closed my wallet with a lock with a mind reading key. But I am sure they have invented that too. (according to China) Having a wife from Beijing, she wants a place there too. Family thing. We were going over later this year to look for a place. From this piece, things have not changed there since I was there. Being a builder, and seeing how things are built were quite concerning.More to say...

Do not fully agree
I do not fully agree with the commentator's observation. The South China Mall in Donguan could be due to poor market research which resulted in the low occupancy rate. It is probably one of the few failed developments. Furthermore, the perspective of those not being able to own a property is one end of the spectrum. I can say for a fact that properties can be purchased with a 30% up front payment rather than the 50% reported in this commentary.

Apartments given to Communist Party members
I have seen the empty towns covered in this article. The socialist aspect of the program is that empty homes are assigned to party members as a reward for service. However, they never move out of their urban homes to occupy these gems - there are no jobs in those areas. It is not uncommon for a party member to own two or three of these deserted homes. They are the ones to be left holding the ball when this ghost economy crashes. Sad to see those citizens obviously being muzzled.

IN MANY COUNTRIES ITS OVERBUILT. SEEMS MORE SO IN CHINA..BUT WHY WHATS THE USE? THIS MONEY COULD HAVE BEEN PUT TO BETTER USE. IF AFTER 3YRS PRICES DROP THE BUILDINGS ^ INFRASTRUCTURE WOULD BE BAD. SECONDLY HOE DO YOU CREATE CITIES WITH NO WORK,JOBS,TRANSPORT ETC. COULD HAVE BEEN BETTERPLANNED. WHY BLINDLY WATE RESOURCES. PEOPLE BUYING CHEAP DONT GAIN,SINCE SOMEONE ELSE LOSES. ITS SHLD BE WIN WIN SITUATION.
