Freedom Fighters

My father Laszlo was a freedom fighter and fled Hungarian during the 56 revolution and came to Australia. My Dad and his friends run through the fields in Sopron to the Austrian border zig zagging as the soldiers fired at them. In the 56 Institute there were various photographs on the wall. One was a photo of 2 freedom fighter, one in uniform and one holding a gun. The one with the gun was my Dad !! I lost him in 2000 and would love to get a copy ?

Refugeeism Is It the New World Order Under Communism!

When the Japanese were told by the Nazi Socialists to take on Asia and Australia. My Father went to New Guinea to take on our enemy straight on. He did not say, let us leave and become Refugees and let us pick a lovely country to go and live in. Les Murray's family chose Australia, so do the Boat People. If they were real Refugees they would have gone to the first safe haven. I think Les Murray is a bit confused about his real intentions to do this programme. His propaganda has backfired!

But what was Les's opinion as a journalist?

Hi Les You are a very generous public man and you have let us read the story of your family's flight in "By the balls" and in this program. It was a story of loss, daring and warmth. From your columns too I know you are a fine journalist in yr own right, among other talents, such as the promotion of the game of football. Is there a difference between the smuggler who takes a refugee to the first country of freedom and one who skips many free countries to get their charges a toehold in Australia?

Similar Journey

Hi, your story brought back memories of what my father told me, how he escaped from Hungary to the Austrian border with his father and brother, although they escaped by themselves without help that I'm told, he remembers near the border that they thought there were mine fields and to get across the field they used long logs and let them fall down and walked across them, he came across with 3 bullets in his leg to the safety of Austria and finally ended in Australia, his bro in Canada pop with us

The other side of the story

Thankyou Les Murray for telling your story. It is so important stories are told, that people listen. My Mother was 10yrs old, May 1940, the night Hollland capitulated, she and nine members of her family hid in the sand dunes of Imijden, the Hook of Holland, desperately trying to find a boat/any boat to give them a chance of surviving. My Grandfather found a boat that would take them to England.the border's were finally opened I would not be here to tell my Mother's story if not for the 'smuggler's

Thank you everyone

Thank you everyone for your comments and for watching this story. Thanks also to Mark Davis who did a fabulous job putting it together so expertly and sensitively. And all the others who contributed, like Kata Kiss who laboured tirelessly on the translations. And all who were in the film, especially the sweet old ladies who were a wealth of information. And, once more, thank you Julius (Gyula).
