Iraq's Deadly Legacy

We have had difficulty finding charities and groups helping these children directly, so if anyone knows of any contacts, please email dateline@sbs.com.au and we'll consider adding the details to this page.

You can also go to the website of the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons (ICBUW) to find out more about its work. The group is campaigning for a ban on the use of uranium in all conventional weapons and weapon systems and for monitoring, health care, compensation and environmental remediation for communities affected by their use.

It says its main focus is to inform and advise policy makers and governments on the threat to human health and the environment of uranium weapons. The ICBUW was formed in 2003 and now represents more than 120 NGOs in 28 countries worldwide.

The ICBUW is petitioning for an immediate end to the use of uranium weapons and for medical treatment and compensation for depleted uranium victims. You can read more about its petition here.

Iraq Solidarity UK also has a 'Help Deformed Children in Fallujah' petition, which it plans to send to the United Nations calling for a full investigation. You can read more here.

The ICBUW says it's also currently trying to raise funds for lobbying work in order to get a resolution passed at the UN General Assembly this October which will force transparency over depleted uranium use.

At present, countries are not required to reveal where they have used uranium weapons, accept any legal responsibility for the weapons once they are fired, or assist contaminated countries in cleaning up.
