Australia is also a popular place for beekeeping, with an estimated 9,600 registered beekeepers across the country.
They produce the 30,000 tonnes of honey made here annually, with an estimated value of $50 million. Around a quarter of that goes overseas and Australia is the world’s tenth largest exporter of honey.
But, like the United States in Ginny Stein’s report, beekeepers here are also facing problems, not only from pesticides threatening colonies, but also from bushfires and drought.
