Errol Morris gets sports fever
Sign of the times: Errol Morris’s latest documentary isn’t premiering at a cinema near you, it’s racking up hits on YouTube. The eight-minute mini-documentary, Team Spirit, is part of an ad campaign by ESPN looking at fans’ obsessions with their teams.
Morris is best known for his feature docs but is also a prolific director of television commercials, and he’s brought his signature style to this hybrid piece. The unseen subjects represent perhaps the ultimate in fandom - going to the grave literally wearing their colours on their sleeves. How would you feel about going to say goodbye to your dear-departed uncle and entering the viewing to find him sprawled in a recliner with the TV on? Although that particular approach freaks me out a little, Morris is cheerful and respectful in his presentation of the stories, and ultimately the film is a sweet celebration of fans’ ‘undying’ support.
