In the expansive world of modern television, more groundbreaking shows are being created today than ever before. America in Primetime is a four-part series which showcases this iconic American art form.

The new golden age of television is now.

Each episode focuses on one character archetype that has remained a staple of primetime through the generations – the Independent Woman, the Man of the House, the Misfit, and the Crusader.

At the heart of the series are more than a hundred in-depth interviews with key figures from primetime television – the creators, writers, directors and actors including James L. Brooks, Larry David, Mary Tyler Moore, David Lynch, Sarah Jessica Parker and Alan Ball, among others. The series presents an extraordinary opportunity to experience the creative process from the inside out.

Episode 1: Man of the House

Man of the House showcases the evolution of men from the kings of their castles in classic family sitcoms to more intricate, conflicted figures in modern shows.

Episode 2: The Crusader

Heroes today are complex. Their stories are told with increasing humanity, depicting characters who confront almost impossible choices as they fight evil in a world where the line between right and wrong is often blurred. 'The Crusader' delves into the increasingly grey area between right and wrong as television heroes confront internal demons while seeking their own forms of justice.

Episode 3: Independent Woman

Far removed from the model housewife of yesterday, women today on TV care less about pleasing others and more about being true to themselves. 'Independent Woman' reveals how women have transformed from model housewives to complex, and sometimes controversial, characters.

Episode 4: The Misfit

Whether they are oddballs, losers or just plain weird, misfits have grown beyond comic stereotypes and are taking centre stage with a vengeance, refusing to apologise for who they are.'The Misfit' celebrates the unique characters who defied comic stereotypes and societal expectations to reflect America’s diverse personalities.
