Michel Hazanavicius' silent comedy surprisingly leads all films with six nominations.

Many artists celebrated in Golden Globes noms

The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball and War Horse are the six films in the running for the Golden Globe for best drama but The Artist, which is in the category for best comedy or musical, has the most Golden Globe nominations.

The Artist, which takes audiences back to 1920s Hollywood when talking pictures were arriving, has six nominations. The Help and The Descendants have five nominations and The Ides of March, Moneyball and Midnight in Paris have four each. Hugo, Carnage, My Week with Marilyn and Albert Nobbs have three each.

The Awards will be presented on January 15, as usual at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

In the category for directors, Michel Hazanavicius and The Artist is up against Woody Allen and Midnight in Paris, which is also in the comedy or musical category. The other contenders for best director are George Clooney (The Ides of March), Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and Martin Scorsese (Hugo).

Hazanavicius, Allen, Clooney and Payne are also competing in the screenplay category although neither Clooney nor Payne worked alone on their respective scripts.

Meryl Streep, who has won more Golden Globe Awards than any other individual, could be about to win her eighth – this time for playing Maggie Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Her most celebrated competition in the category for best actress for a drama includes Glenn Close for playing a man in Albert Nobbs and Tilda Swinton for playing a harassed mother in We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Those competing for best actress in a comedy or musical include Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet (both for Carnage), Charlize Theron (Young Adult) and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn).

Turning to the men, Clooney has a nomination in the category for best actor in a drama, but for The Descendants rather than for directing himself in The Ides of March. Ryan Gosling scored a nomination for The Ides of March, however, and also for Crazy, Stupid, Love in the category for best actor in a comedy or musical.

The Golden Globes are held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is made up of less than 100 LA-based journalists who disseminate information about the US film industry across the world. The first awards ceremony was held in 1944.
