Synopsis: Set in the '30s in rural France. Elisa is married to and profoundly in love with Gilles, who works at the local steel factory. They have two little girls and are expecting a third child. Elisa's young sister, Victorine, often comes around to lend a hand and to play with the children. Her sensuality wins Gilles over, and when Elisa discovers their affair, she decides to remain silent and wait for their crush to end. Gilles' lust and obsession for Victorine forces him to admit his liaison to his wife. She offers to follow Victorine when he suspects she has a boyfriend. When Victorine announces her intention to marry, Gilles loses control and Elisa's unbearable suffering finally surfaces.
