What gives me most pleasure at the moment, apart from my beloved Hawthorn football club, is watching my vegies grow. Secretly I'd harboured a desire to follow your lead and plant my own vegie garden in country vic. But now I know I could never bear the disappointment of all those failed trees and plants. It'd break my heart! Instead I'll be content with my small, but thriving Northcote back yard.

Thanks for your comments Denise and Sheridan. It always makes me feel slightly less mad when I hear other sane sounding people who are doing the same thing. Hope you can stick around the blog and share some of your experiences also. Good luck with the walled garden. this is a dream of my wife's also. We are trying to grow a bay tree hedge around our vegie garden, but it is growing so slowly I would have been better off trying to grow a stone wall :-)

Hey Johnno, neighbours animals can be a real pest. We went away for a long weekend last November and returned to find our neighbour's sheep had had a long weekend also - in our garden. Every fruit tree and rose was completely denuded and half the grape vines torn down from their trellis. But we cant be too cranky. It's only a matter of time before one of our animals finds its way to their place and then we'll be hoping for their understanding.

Hi David, My husband and I too are about to embark on a similar journey - from the bright lights of Brisbane into the cooler climes of the Tasmanian midlands. We leave next Thursday and I am really inspired to hear of your trials and dedication. I'm a complete novice to the concept of a kitchen garden, but inspired by visions of slow food and slow living, am planning a large walled gardens where (I hope) our 7 year old twins and I will discover the joys of growing our own food too.

We took a photo of our first egg layed by one of our chickens. As we had only recently moved to our country lifestyle 'villa' we were very eggcited and emailed the photo to all our friends and family. The egg was displayed in a large beautiful bowl all alone and we received some interesting feedback.
By the way...the taste of country living was ...delicious!

My rain shoes are on for you as well. Life on the land seems so easy from the burbs. We are also in he process of 're-definition' and finding it all tougher than expected. Of the 15 or so trees planted this year, only 5 look like making it into summer. Of course, that is after the neighbour's cows ate the remaining fruit trees last summer...patience, perserverance and sheer bloody-mindedness will have to bring us all through. Keep up the good work.

Hey Dave & family, keep the dream alive! Through the dust & roos, the drought & bitter walnuts, your boys will grow up to thank you a thousand times over for a love of food they would struggle to get in the big smoke. Keep sharing your lives & inspire us all with the passion to follow in your brave gumboot steps.

A mans destiny is affected by his environment from the earliest age. Raised in an Orange Grove one is destined to grow fruit.
Loved the writing Dave.

An auspicious beginning, blogwise -- a delightful read. However, I can't help thinking that if walnuts, hazelnuts and pears were meant to thrive in south-eastern Australia, they would. Any gene manipulators in your toolshed?

My family and I will do a little rain dance for you David. For you and the rest of the farmers. I'd say our dance will scare the wildlife off as well so you might get to eat some of your fruit and veggies!

Thanks Phil. The city spat me out, but things have turned out a whole lot tougher out here than expected. The lure of the big smoke may win out again one day. For now, we'll keep trying to keep the dream alive.

Congratulations on living what (I occasionally think) is my dream lifestyle.
And then the city sucks me back in.
