We've been using that principle without even knowing it's name! Herbs seem criminal to buy. We've divided up what started as one heirloom artichoke plant from Diggers and now have 30 beautiful little artichoke plants on the way. We also grow asparagus (should be able to harvest next spring), raspberries, etc.
I'm surprised that you didn't taste a difference with your spuds - fresh ones blew me away.

Hot Tips
Vanilla extract
Be careful to choose vanilla extract that is labeled as "pure" as opposed to the synthetic varieties. Vanilla essence is a stronger version of vanilla extract and only a couple of drops are required for a similar result.
Glossary
Green Mango
Any unripe mango, used mainly raw - in salads and side dishes. It has a more tart taste than ripe mangoes.
