Your Dad is right, Simon. If the cows lose too much condition, then we endager conception. This is the delicate balancing act that farmers all over the world must consider. Feed is very expensive due to the drought, but without it, the cows may not conceive. If the cows dont conceive, you waste the feed and expense on the bull, and miss a breeding season, which impacts next year's farm productivity.

I emailed this to my dad who currently has about 20 cattle and he replied "I can relate to all of this and as you say, it is well written. I can't wait to hear how the cows are fertilised to produce next year's calves" ...
