I bought some red carrots at the St Kilda Farmer's Market 2 weeks ago - it is amazing to cut into them and see the bright orange inside with the deep crimson skin!!

Hi. Does anyone know where I can buy purple carrots in Melbourne. Unfortunately, growing them myself is not an option.
Thanks Carli for demystifying these little purple treasures. I spied some purple potatoes at our local market and your story inspired me to pop them in my basket and give them a go. I look forward to hearing about other unusual varietals you happen upon in your travels and will also keep an eye out for you in Good Living.

Hi Martha, The carrots do keep their colour, they look great on the plate. I cooked them a couple of ways. Steamed, then braised in butter and salt and pepper with baby turnips, also found at the markets. They were great baked as per Matthew Evans' recipe, a darker shade of purple when they came out of the oven, a good addition to a roast dinner. Also good raw as Marina suggests. The flavour is more intense than an orange carrot they are earthy and at the same time a little sweet.

To answer Martha's questions, the purple carrots are brilliant and the kids love them. We grew ours once from seed from Diggers in VIC and I'm not sure about cooking them - they didn't last that long the kids were chewing on them as soon as they were allowed!
The perfect treat.

Question is...how do they taste? The look absolutely fantastic - does the colour fade with cooking?
Haven't seen them much around Melbourne.

Great article. I love hearing about these new but old varieties. It's great to see them coming back.
I'm off to the farmers' market in Canberra tomorrow morning and will definitely be on the look out for purple carrots.
