Pears are one of my favorite fruit and are so versatile. I use them in deserts - pear and rhubarb crumble and poached with red wine and spices - as well as in soup. Pear and sweet potato and pear and parsnip soup are fantastic. The huge range now available at farmers' markets is vastly different from those available in supermarkets and talking to the farmers provides great inspiration for new dishes. Well, as i am off apples (unless they are certified Tassie produce) I am needing a substitute!!
Easy to overlook the pear. I am such a creature of habit when it comes to my fruits. Will give them another go tomorrow and perfect timing for the farmers market on Wednesdays!! Good timing Carli!
On another plus side it will be a new fruit name for my 16mnth old to try..... was getting pretty tired hearing of 'naanaaa' and 'storbearreeee' on repeat every day. great reminder thanks.

What Snare says is so true - clearly I need lessons in pear purchasing and storing - I always get it wrong and end up with rotting pears in the fruit bowl. THe beautiful introduction (and photo) has reignited my interest.

Kibbeh Nayeh
For this raw meat dish, make sure the mince is very fresh with a bright pink colour, and contains little to no fat. To achieve the very fine mince the meat should be put through a mincer two or three times.
Glossary
Perilla Leaves
Perilla leaves (rau tia to) are large leaves, purple on one side and dark green on the other. The leaves are shredded and used in eggplant dishes and in rice paper rolls. Also called shiso leaf in Japanese cookery.
