A new series

28 October 2010 | 0:00 - By Matthew Evans

Nick is on board. So is Ross, thankfully, because he seems to be the one who does most of the work. And I’m involved too. Yes, the rumour that is starting to build in Tassie (no, not that really interesting one, the one that there may be a new series of Gourmet Farmer) is true. Max, our trusted director/cameraman/friend, has been down a couple of times to check things out. Calls are being made, plans drawn up, ideas bandied about.

Locals are already asking the question: Will Cygnet, the gorgeous town closest to the farm, actually get a look in on the show this time? Has Ross learned to shoot straight yet? Will I continue to look like a goose with no practical skills and hat hair on national telly and do a voiceover that sounds like I’ve just gotten out of bed?

Yes, yes, yes!

Well, that’s the plan so far, but if the last time we filmed was anything to go by, who knows? We shot plenty of material that never made it to air. What we do will be filmed and edited and packaged into a seamless show by a team a long way away. What we do know is that you’ll come back to see how the farm has changed, how life has changed. We’re hoping to visit more of Tasmania’s brilliant producers, including some in areas we’ve not shot before.

There are new products to trial and new markets to visit and more of the insanely lovable locals to meet. We hope to get out on the water again, to forage in the woods, and to (this bit we’re really excited about) film more of it outside in the warmer months.

To all those wonderful people who’ve written (from around the country and, surprisingly, from around the world) to the farm, on the website, to me personally or to Nick and Ross, we can finally answer the question. Yes, there will be more shots of a dag talking about pigs, more foodie exploits on and off the farm, and more boys’ own adventures in this stunning state we’re lucky enough to call home.

Hurray, saw most of the first episode of the new series last Thursday and went and ordered the DVD straight away so I don't have to wait weeks when it comes out. Have the first series DVD, the Real Food Companion and Farm in Winter. All brilliant. So inspiring. Hope to visit Tasmania next spring (2012) and see all the wonderful places and the markets you show. Keep up the great work.

As I sit on the back deck waiting for my pork spare ribs to finishing sozzling in the oven, I get a call from Mum saying the next season of Gourmet Farmer starts this Thursday! That pork is gonna taste even better now knowing the imminent return of such a deliciously inspiring show! Bring on Thursday!

Such great news!! We have the DVD of series 1, and everytime we watch it (quite often when there is rubbish on tv!!) we are more and more inspired! We are planning another trip to Tassi later in the year, just to visit some of the places on the series! Such a well produced doco, that everyone can attempt some or all of Matthew's brilliance!

Really enjoying the re runs of the first series - forgotten how well made it was, congrats to SBS and mathew's team. We have noticed a huge surge in interest in all things to do with smoking food, from books to smokers and a lot of the credit must rest with what's happening in places like tasmania. Mathew - when you are next in Sydney please come in and sign your books - a huge fan base here and your book is one of our best sellers. Written with honesty and passion

Dear Matthew, I so pleased that there is going to be another series of Gourmet Farmer, can't wait. All our family watched the last one and thoroughly enjoyed it. The difference with this show, that makes it such a success, is that the viewer gets caught up in the adventure of trying to start from scratch and seeing everything come to fruition and it's not just about cooking although that's good as well. All the best with the new series.

You don't have to leave W.A to live that kind of life...down here on the South Coast the climate is very similar to Tassie's. Average annual temperature is 21 degrees and the Karri loam will grow anything. Plus you're surrounded by beautiful Karri forests. I wouldn't be anywhere else.

Great, a new series. I teach VCE Agriculture and Hoticulture in a suburban school to 16-18 yr olds. Its hard to do the Agriculture side for 38 students, only 3 of whom are female.Mind you we have 40 gardens of organic vegetables which we sell. I bought your DVD because of the chicken killing episode. However, both classes enjoyed every episode and a whole world was opened up to them. They can speak of truffles, goat cheese, bashing a pork leg and having a gourmet lunch with friends. Thanks

Great to hear a new series is planned. I had to smile at Jo's comment about becoming an adopted Tasmanian in two weeks. We have lived here since 1980, and are just about Tasmanians now, rather than mainlanders. It takes a while, Jo. Having said that, many mainlanders have been the backbone of a resurgent Tasmania, so the more the merrier as far as i am concerned.

Hot Tips

Choosing and prepping asparagus

Choose asparagus with tight, well-formed heads and avoid any with thin woody, dry and dirty stems. Snap off the woody end of the asparagus by holding the spear in the middle and bend the bottom until it finds its natural snapping point. Discard the woody ends, or use in a stock.

Glossary

Gorgonzola

Gorgonzola is a creamy blue cheese used in the classic Italian dish: gnocchi gorgonzola.
