I was disappointed in the Australian chick peas I purchased from an International grocer in Woolloongabba 3 months ago. The dried product was much smaller than what I was used to preparing and the colour was very dark, something akin with ochre. They took ages to cook and didnt improve in looks. I soldiered on and turned some into hummous. We just couldnt get passed the colour to properly evaluate the flavour and wont buy anymore that looked like these.

Re stockists, try health food stores, Indian spice shops and the health food aisle of supermarkets, no specific brand names. Ted says they are around, you just need to check country of origin labelling.

Yes but where would one look to buy specifically local Australian-grown chickpeas? Any brand names of local-grown chickpeas, major stockists etc?

This is great news that there are local chickpeas. Another informative and well researched article Carli. I love chickpeas added to my salad leaves for summer protein. And, I'm not so sure I'm buying Australia. Now I will make sure! Thanks to SBS for the recipe links. I'll have to put some of my recipe ideas for chickpeas on my own food site. @frombecca x

Indonesian meals

There's an art to eating an Indonesian meal. It all starts with rice and then you add small amounts of curries and other dishes like sambals and pickles to add an extra bit of heat or a burst of sour crunch. Its fun to eat with your hands - use your right hand or a spoon and fork. If you've been invited to an Indonesian home, come hungry - Indonesians are incredibly generous.

Glossary

Parboil

To boil vegetables until half cooked. Used to part-cook potatoes and other hard root vegetables prior to roasting them at a high temperature to ensure that the inside is cooked while the outside crisps up well.
