West African ginger drink

Cuisine: African Created by Cosmos Kwabena Amofah

This is a healthy, refreshing, zesty drink. It’s taken either hot or cold, and is an excellent flu remedy.

Ingredients

3 large ginger roots
6 limes
2-3 cups of water
1 heaped tbsp peppercorns
1 heaped tbsp raw sugar

Preparation

Leaving the skin on, chop the ginger into small pieces.
Chop lime with rind into small chunks.

In a blender, put more ginger than lime and add enough water to be able to blend it. Taste the mixture as you go and add more lime or ginger as needed.

Strain the mixture through a sieve into a bowl and squeeze remaining juice from the pulp.

In the blender add peppercorns and sugar – then return the strained liquid to the blender and blend until smooth.

Once more strain the mixture through a sieve into a saucepan.

Heat the saucepan and bring the liquid to the boil. As soon as the liquid has reached boiling point take it off the heat and allow to cool.

Pour liquid over ice and add a little cold water and drink!

more or less if needed?
what does this mean exactly?: "Taste the mixture as you go and add more lime or ginger as needed." Am i aiming for a balance between the two, or should it be more ginger-y or more lime-y? I haven't made it yet, i might know what the statement means when i do....but in the meantime, can anyone who has made it help define this please? (my rating of this recipe is forced)

re: Excellent flu remedy
I think you'll find that there is scientific evidence to prove that ginger has medicinal properties. Stop being so self-righteous. Or go ride your high horse elsewhere.

Excellent flu remedy
Really? Do you have any unbiased scientific evidence available for this unsubstantiated medical claim? Influenza (the 'flu) is a serious disease that kills up to 49,000 people in the US each year (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-related_deaths.htm). Making random comments about "remedies" for a potentially fatal disease is irresponsible. Try sticking to publishing recipes rather and leave medical advice to qualified professionals.

Hot Ginger Tea is good to drink especially at winter time. It is used in the Phils. to alleviate (gassy) stomach, I havent used lime with ginger, I will try it today for my nagging ichy throat.

Necessary to heat?
Just wondering - in the video demonstration they do not heat the liquid over the stovetop before chilling and drinking, but it says to do this in the recipe. Is this a necessary step that was skipped in the sake of time? Or can I skip it as well?

This drink was incredibly powerful, yet unbelievably refreshing. i had a sore throat for quite some time, and a drink of this daily, really cleared it up, as well as greatly benefiting my overall general health.

ginger drink
love the opportunity to make a ginger drink in my own kitchen. have always loved ginger and look for new ways to use the root. To now have the recipe to make my own I no longer have to lug home a plastic bottle from the supermarket.

Ginger Drink
It sounded refreshing for a hot day & it was! Easy to prepare & I liked the fact that ginger aids the digestion & therefore makes this a "healthy" drink.
