In a postcode dominated by trendy dining destinations, this wallet-friendly cafe has been catering to students, bargain-hunters and fans of Maltese snacks for decades.

A quick walk around the corner from Oxford Street reveals a familiar scarlet sign decorated with the cross of Malta. Inside, spartan furnishings and an ever-changing array of posters advertising cultural events decorate the scenery. But fans don't come here for the decor. The cafe's speciality is pastizzi: flaky golden parcels of pastry that have been a staple of Maltese culinary tradition for hundreds of years.

One of Sydney's longest-standing eateries, the cafe has changed ownership a few times since opening in 1942. It's now back in good hands with the Hili family, who have been making the tasty pastry goodies since the late 1950s. Tuck into bargain-priced flaky pastries filled with spinach and ricotta, pea, or chicken and mushroom and you'll quickly understand why this style of food claims so many devotees.

Hot Tips

Couscous

Always fluff couscous with a fork, rather than a spoon, as this will keep the grains light and fluffy rather than stodgy.

Glossary

Green Mango

Any unripe mango, used mainly raw - in salads and side dishes. It has a more tart taste than ripe mangoes.
